This event marked the resumption of missions to the Moon for Russia after a nearly fifty-year hiatus. The launch of the Soyuz-2.1b launch vehicle with the Luna-25 onboard was a historic moment for the nation.

With a thunderous roar at 8:11 a.m., the “Soyuz-2.1b” spacecraft lifts off from the ground. This mission is carrying the Luna-25 automatic station as its sole passenger. It marks the first time a domestic vehicle has been launched to the Earth’s natural satellite since 1976. The lunar mission was initiated in the 1950s, with the Soviet program aiming to study the moon’s physical properties, survey its surface, and eventually land cosmonauts. Previous automatic stations were only able to collect soil samples twice before the project came to a halt.
The objective is to locate ice
The current mission marks the beginning of a new phase of research. Advanced equipment is expected to surpass its predecessors and achieve the first-ever soft landing near the South Pole of the Moon, which has challenging terrain. The primary goals of this mission include studying the rarefied exosphere, collecting soil samples, and confirming the presence of ice.
The autonomous station is equipped with 8 scientific instruments that will operate under extreme conditions. Temperatures in the lunar Polar region range from -150 to +120 degrees Celsius. The anticipated landing site is near the Boguslavsky crater on August 21st.

“Today marks a significant milestone in the history of space exploration. The progress being made at the Vostochny Cosmodrome is a testament to its development. The construction of the launch complex for Angara rockets is being personally overseen by Russian President Vladimir Putin. This will pave the way for future manned spacecraft launches from Vostochny,” stated Governor Vasily Orlov. “The cosmodrome has also had a positive impact on the town of Tsiolkovsky, which is experiencing growth.
