During the evenings of May 5 and 6, the peak of the yearly Eta Aquarid “meteor shower” will occur. Despite the presence of a full Moon, which will create a lot of light in the night sky this year, the event is expected to be quite luminous thanks to the gravitational pull of Jupiter. “Hitech” explains the formation of this meteor shower and provides tips on how to observe it.
Each year in late April and May, the Earth passes through the Eta Aquarid meteor shower. During the peak period, which typically occurs on May 5-6, observers on our planet have the opportunity to witness an average of 10-30, and sometimes even up to 50, “shooting stars” per hour, depending on the optimal viewing conditions.
This year, the peak of the meteor shower coincides with the full moon. During this time, the Earth’s satellite will be fully illuminated by the Sun and will remain visible in the sky from sunset to dawn, making it challenging for stargazers to observe the meteor shower. However, experts anticipate a spectacular display as the Earth passes through a segment of the meteor stream that has been “pulled” closer to us by the gravitational force of Jupiter. NASA researchers predict that the southern hemisphere will experience up to 120-160 meteors per hour, while the northern hemisphere will witness slightly fewer meteors.
How to spot shooting stars in the sky?
The meteor shower known as the Eta Aquariids can be seen from both the northern and southern hemispheres. However, those in the southern hemisphere have a better chance of witnessing this celestial event due to the higher position of the radiant, which is the point in the sky where the meteor stream appears to originate from, located in the constellation Aquarius.
The name Eta Aquariids is derived from the star Eta Aquarii (Latin η Aquarii) which is near the radiant. It’s important to note that Eta Aquarii itself is not the source of the meteors. In the northern hemisphere, the radiant can be observed in the eastern sky after 2 a.m., and later in the southeast near the horizon until dawn.
To witness the meteor shower, it is not necessary to solely focus on the Aquarius constellation; it is advisable to also keep an eye on the neighboring constellations. Meteor streaks that approach the radiant point tend to be brief and harder to spot. Conversely, those that veer away from it cover a greater distance. The Eta-Aquariids are renowned for their swift velocity, reaching up to 66 km/s. Consequently, they are capable of leaving luminous trails in their wake that remain visible for a few seconds.
Where can I observe the Eta-Aquarid meteor shower and how?
The Eta-Aquarid meteors can be seen in the night sky starting around midnight. However, in the northern hemisphere, they are very low above the horizon and may be difficult to spot. The best time to observe them is after 2 o’clock in the morning, and they reach their peak a few hours before dawn.
No special equipment is needed to see the shooting stars – they are visible to the naked eye. However, it is recommended to find a location away from sources of light pollution, such as cities, to enhance your viewing experience.
Your eyes may take up to 30 minutes to adjust to the darkness, so it is important to avoid using your phone or any other bright objects that could interfere with your night vision.
If the sky was too cloudy on the night of the sighting and you were unlucky, you can give it another shot the next night. The high flux activity will continue for several days, so there’s still a chance to witness something amazing.

The Perseid meteor shower is set to reach its peak on August 11-13. This spectacular celestial event will be visible to residents of the entire Northern Hemisphere, including Yakutians. To ensure you don’t miss out on this popular phenomenon, the Moscow planetarium has provided some tips.
This year, the conditions for observing the Perseids will be particularly favorable, especially if there are no clouds. During the peak days, the Moon will be in the new moon phase, meaning its light will not interfere with stargazing.
According to expert forecasts, there could be up to 100 meteors per hour, equating to around two “shooting stars” every minute. The radiant, or the point in the sky where the meteors appear to originate from, will be visible throughout the entire night.
When is the best time to observe the Perseids meteor shower?
The Perseids meteor shower is generally active from July 14 to September 1. The most favorable time to observe the shower is during the night of the peak, as well as the week before and after August 12.
During these specific dates, stargazing can be enjoyed shortly after sunset and before dawn.
Where is the ideal location to watch the Perseids meteor shower?
It is recommended to go outside of urban areas in order to have the best view of the meteor shower. The mountains or remote locations away from major cities are the ideal places to observe the Perseids. Experts suggest going at least 30 kilometers away from populated areas, and even further, more than 100 kilometers away from major cities like Moscow.
Where to search
In the northeastern direction, within the region of the radiant, which lies on the boundary of the constellations Perseus, Giraffe, and Cassiopeia.
Direct your attention to Cassiopeia – this constellation bears a resemblance to an inverted “M”. Slightly towards the left and lower on the horizon, you will find the prominent star Capella. The radiant of the Perseids is situated between Cassiopeia and Capella. During August, approximately around midnight, it can be observed in the northeast direction. This is the precise location where you should focus your gaze. The meteors will appear to originate from the radiant itself.
What to watch out for
Perseid meteors are bright and white. They zoom through the sky at high speeds. Some of them can glow for several seconds, these meteors are known as bolides.
What you require to observe
Clear weather. In 2023, there will be favorable conditions for observing the Perseids. This is a rare occurrence. Last year, the full moon obstructed the view of the meteor shower in all its magnificence.
However, if you are away from city lights, you can witness the meteor shower with the naked eye, without any astronomical instruments. Anyone can enjoy this summer night spectacle, as pointed out by the Moscow Planetarium.

Venus, which has been absent from the sky since mid-summer, will once again be visible for observation at the end of August, this time as a morning star. According to the Ufa planetarium, it will be seen low above the eastern horizon in the constellation of Cancer about 1.5 hours before sunrise.
The scientific and educational institution explained that Venus, which was easily visible in the night sky throughout spring and early summer, became invisible due to its proximity to the Sun in the mid-summer sky. The planet was positioned at a small angle from the Sun and set around the same time, making it impossible to see.
At 14:14 Moscow time on Sunday, August 13, there was a celestial event known as the lower conjunction, where Venus aligned with the Sun in a straight line from the perspective of Earth. This alignment will make Venus invisible to the average observer for the next few weeks. However, by the end of August, the planet will become visible in the early morning sky as a bright and large star, shining against the backdrop of the dawn. This visibility will continue until June 4, 2024, when Venus will undergo its upper conjunction with the Sun, aligning once again in a straight line but this time above the Sun in relation to Earth.
One of the minarets of the Ar-Rahim mosque in Ufa has recently been adorned with a brand new dome.
A new dome was put in place on one of the minarets of the Ar-Rahim mosque in Ufa on Friday, August 18.
As previously reported, the dome of the minaret of the Ar-Rahim mosque, which is currently under construction, collapsed on March 13 due to strong winds. Thankfully, no injuries were reported and the structural integrity of the building remained intact. Experts attributed the collapse to an engineering miscalculation.
In June 2023, the republic’s leader issued an order to resume construction using donations. However, evaluation work must be completed before construction can begin.
Financier Minchichova unveils a straightforward method for building a retirement fund
Valeria Minchichova, a candidate in economic sciences and Deputy Director of the Institute of Financial Literacy at the Financial University under the Russian Government, has revealed a creative approach to saving for retirement. According to Minchichova, it is possible to save for old age in a fun and enjoyable way. The key is to develop the habit of setting aside a small amount of money on a regular basis, even if it’s just 10 rubles. The news was reported by the Prime agency.
Minchichova recommends making regular savings a priority. To help with this, there are special games available that can help foster financial discipline.
She provided an example of a piggy bank that can be filled with either cash or non-cash items. For instance, you can start by saving 10 rubles on the first day, 20 rubles on the second day, 30 rubles on the third day, and so on until you reach a total of 150 rubles in the piggy bank. On the 16th day, you would save 10 rubles less, which is 140 rubles, and on the 17th day, you would save 130 rubles, continuing this pattern until the end of the month.
This method allows you to accumulate a sum of 2,400 rubles by the end of the month. It may not require substantial spending, but the amount is quite significant.
This interactive approach adds excitement and a sense of competition. The funds saved in this piggy bank can be transferred to a savings account.
The specialist suggests introducing a game to your kids where they can cross out the days on a calendar. The key is to resist the temptation to spend any money on unnecessary purchases. Instead, this money can be saved in a financial emergency fund or deposited into a savings account.
Four zodiac signs with the highest amount of negative karma are identified
Each of us is unique, even when we fall under the same astrological sign. However, there are still certain similarities that can be found among individuals. For instance, there are some individuals who possess a corrupted karma. Let us explore further to discover who these individuals are.
Scorpios Although Scorpios are known for their belligerent nature, they possess a kind and nurturing side, especially when it comes to their own children. However, their tendency towards envy and vindictiveness can easily backfire. Seeking revenge is not a viable solution, as it only drags them further into negativity and has a detrimental effect on their karma. Moreover, Scorpios often struggle with feelings of jealousy and possessiveness, treating everything as their personal property. Such behavior does not go unnoticed by the universe, and it eventually brings consequences. To restore balance to their karma, Scorpios can engage in acts of kindness, as they have a compassionate nature. Failing to do so leads to an accumulation of debts that become increasingly difficult to rectify.
Sagittarians frequently turn to deception and manipulation in order to achieve their own objectives. As a result, their karma can become significantly tainted, leading to a period of misfortune. Individuals of this astrological sign must utilize their understanding of psychology effectively, steering it in a positive direction, such as aiding others in problem-solving. By doing so, they can navigate their way to happiness and success more swiftly, preserving their energy and dedicating their free time to their interests. Nevertheless, the universe consistently presents them with karmic challenges to test their behavior and their tendency to treat others as mere commodities.
Pisces are known for their kind and compassionate nature, but unfortunately, some individuals from this zodiac sign have found themselves on our list for all the wrong reasons. Their karma has been tainted due to their tendency to shift blame onto others. Instead of taking responsibility for their actions, they point fingers and make others the scapegoat for their problems. It is crucial for Pisces individuals to introspect and find objective reasons for their difficulties, rather than relying on others to come to their rescue. This self-reflection and accountability will be a significant step towards purifying their karma.
Karma operates on certain universal laws that apply to everyone. To avoid accumulating karmic debts, it is essential to regularly evaluate one’s own behavior and strive for genuine happiness through honest means.
