This galaxy can only be observed from its edge, giving it a shape resembling a classic flying saucer, earning it the nickname “UFO Galaxy”. NGC 2683 is situated at a distance of 20 million light years from Earth. It is believed to possess a similar structure to our own Milky Way galaxy.
This group of stars was first documented by the astronomer Hevelius in 1660. He chose the name Lynx for this constellation due to its connection with the Lynx predator, which requires exceptional eyesight to spot all of its stars from Earth.
Lynx is also indirectly associated with Triptolemus, a hero from Greek mythology who was taught the secrets of agriculture and bread-making by Demeter. Triptolemus was tasked with spreading these skills throughout Greece, and he was given a plow and a golden chariot pulled by dragons as gifts from Demeter.
In various countries, Triptolemus encountered challenging situations. For instance, there was an incident where the king of Peloponnese attempted to tame dragons while Triptolemus was asleep, but ended up being thrown from the chariot and suffering a crash. On another occasion, the wild Getae tribe killed one of the dragons.
Lynchus, the Scythian king, had conflicting intentions towards Triptolemus. It is uncertain whether he wanted to kill Triptolemus himself or wanted to claim the glory of a hero. However, Demeter, who continued to watch over her servant’s worship, transformed the wicked man into a motley lynx. This transformation allowed Lynchus’ cunning soul to be visible from the outside. The lynx now resides safely in the sky as the constellation bearing the same name.

The constellation Lynx was first introduced by Jan Hevelius in his renowned work Uranographia, which was published in 1690. Legend has it that Hevelius himself possessed extraordinary visual acuity, enabling him to discern stars of magnitude 7, which are twice as faint as the average person, well into his old age. In the early 1640s, while meticulously sketching the moon, Hevelius discovered that his friend Pierre Gassendi was also working on a lunar map. Uncertain about whether to proceed, Hevelius sent his drawings to Gassendi for his opinion. Gassendi, recognizing Hevelius’s exceptional eyesight, encouraged him to continue, saying that he had the vision of a lynx.
As an alternative name, Hevelius proposed “Tiger” for the constellation, as the stars resemble the markings of a predator. This comparison, however, is questionable. Interestingly, a few years prior to this, Hevelius had another idea.

The constellation is indirectly associated with the civilizing actions of Triptolemus, a hero of Greek culture, who was taught the secrets of bread-making by Demeter and was sent to the valleys with the mission of transforming Greece into an agricultural land. He was equipped with a plow and a chariot made of gold, which was pulled by dragons, given to him by Demeter.
